Sciatica is a condition whereby the sciatic nerve, running from the base of the spine down the back of the leg, is irritated or affected by inflammation of the surrounding soft tissues.
This may cause pain, pins & needles, tingling, numbness or burning sensations anywhere along the path of the nerve.
It can be isolated to certain points such as the buttocks, knee area, or calf; or it may be apparent along the entire length of the nerve from the lower back to the feet and toes.
Pain is caused when the sciatic nerve is irritated, scraped, twisted, stretched or pinched as it exits the spine.

How will a Chiropractor help in treating Sciatica?
As a chiropractor, our approach is to treat sciatica using gentle, controlled adjustments to correct the interference from the spinal structure. At Optimal Chiropractic, we use a device called an Activator, which uses a low-force instrument to accurately relieve pain and symptoms. Research proves that Chiropractic has a 72% success rate in the treatment of Sciatica. A study from the European Spine Journal* published in 2013 shows Chiropractic adjustments result in 72% success rate in treating sciatica compared to 20% success from physical therapy and 50% from corticosteroid injections.
